Vietnam’s Da Nang to build night zone to lure more visitors

Da Nang City in central Vietnam will build a night zone for shopping and entertainment in a bid to draw more tourists.

The Vietnam National Administration of Tourism said Wednesday on its website that the night zone will cost over VND12.7 billion (US$594,152) and have 200 booths offering food, specialties, clothes, and an entertainment area for teenagers upon completion.

The zone will sit on a 1.2 hectare land plot on the east edge of the Han River Bridge, along the Tran Hung Dao sidewalk.

It will open at 6:00 pm every day with no closing time so visitors can enjoy their shopping at their will.

But no date for the construction work to begin has been announced.

According to the Da Nang portal, the construction of the night zone is aimed at creating a new tourist product, attracting more travelers to the city, and spurring tourism development.

Da Nang has been considered a popular tourist destination in recent years thanks to its strategic location on the central coast.

But visitors used to complain that they did not know where to go and what to spend money on in a city deemed as boring, apart from a handful of karaoke parlors, mini discotheques, and beer shops.

Things have changed since the city began to rotate the Han River Bridge at night. Work began on the construction of the bridge in 1998 and it was opened two years later.

Local residents and tourists increasingly flock to the area to admire the spectacle, and the latter usually prefer hotel rooms that offer a good view of the bridge.

The city has seen an increase in the number of tourists, particularly foreigners, once it started lighting up more of its bridges and opening more entertainment venues.
