Viet Nam and Laos to complete border marker planting this year

Viet Nam’s border delegation and their Lao counterparts have agreed at their 24th annual meeting held in Vientiane, Laos, from February 10-12, to complete the planting of more markers along their shared border line and upgrading of existing border markers in 2015.

The Vietnamese delegation is led by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Head of the National Border Committee, Ho Xuan Son, while the Lao delegation is led by Saleumxay Kommasith, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Head of Laos-Viet Nam Border Committee.

At the meeting, the two sides reviewed the coordination in managing border areas, especially the implementation of the Viet Nam-Laos Agreement on National Border Regulations, the project on planting and upgrading national border markers and the governmental-level agreement on solving unplanned migration issues and unregistered marriages. The agenda also includes the cooperation in economic-social development in border areas and other specific issues the two sides agreed at the 23th annual meeting.

The two sides agreed that the stable situation, good social order in border areas over the past years have facilitated economic-social development and ensured security-national defence of both countries.

As far as plans and measures to better the border management are concerned, the two countries agreed to step up coordination to combat trans-border crimes, especially drug crimes.

Many recommendations to encourage friendship exchanges and promote economic-social development cooperation in border areas were put forward at the meeting.
